Day one on tour with the Coburg Camping Crew
Friday 11 September
All meet up at Humpty Doo Servo early before setting off. Corey, Sarah and Arley in one car; Rod, Judy and myself in one car; and the Welsh car with Jo, Stephen and Lowri-ellen. 2 hours on the Arnhem Highway to Jabiru for last fuel stop before heading towards Coburg Peninsula. Crossed the infamous Cahills Crossing but only one little croc hanging out and then couple hours on the dirt to Wiligi Outstation. Pulled up and set up camp; couple tents and swags, the camper and some eco-tents. We joined Rueben, Liz and Aaron from Wiligi Experience for sundowners – well self invited ourselves for a drink anyway. Enjoyed the sunset and enjoyed our first night out under the stars!
Day Two on tour with the Coburg Camping Crew
Saturday 12 September
Lazy day around camp at Wiligi, went for a little drive along the beach and up to the headland. Quick fish off the rocks, little walk along the beach, and some drinks and nibbles with a view. Hop skip down to the rocks to go looking for oysters, eaten fresh off the rocks and some to take home for later. Beautiful fire and learnt a new game Brandy (based on Frustration).
Day Three outta town with the Coburg Camping Crew
Sunday 13 September
Borrowed Wiligi Experience boats and headed over to Minimini Creek to try our luck with some crabbing and fishing. Landed plenty of little fish and kept a couple for dinner and one crab! Seafood galore and BBQ for dinner.
Day Four cruising with the Coburg Camping Crew
Monday 14 September
Packed up and headed off after pancakes in to Garig Ganuk Barlu National Park. Stopped at Black Point Ranger Station to check in and have a look at the cultural centre. Hot lap around the camp sites and Smith Point before heading back down the road to find Venture North. Chilled out afternoon checking out local beach and watching the sharks chase fish in the shallow water.
Day Five of the Coburg Camping Crew adventure
Tuesday 15 September
Out on the bay with Travis from Venture North… Corey, Sarah, Rod, JO, Lowri-ellen and Stephen headed out early in the morning for a fishing trip while Judy and I hung out reading and playing cats… Then in the afternoon we headed over to the Victoria Settlement ruins to learn about the 70 odd people who called this remote part of the world home for 11 years from 1836. Unbelievable how well the ruins have remained intact – really good stone mason! I visited here about 17 years ago and was nice to see it again. Got to use the best shower in the world enjoying the sun starting to set looking out over the water. Sunset nibbles and finally got an epic NT sunset. Freshly caught streamed fish for dinner.
Day Six and Seven
Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September
Said goodbye to Venture North and headed back to Wiligi Outstation… hot afternoon and just chilled out, napping, reading and playing uno and cards. Chicken on the barbie and one last glorious sunset. Up early, packed up, quick walk on the beach while the boys did some last minute car tinkering before hitting the road to head home back to the real world in Darwin.
Interstate travel restrictions were easing particular between the NT and QLD and I managed to duck home for fortnight holiday during the COVID-19 mayhem.
